Research from the BBC Afghan service shows the militants now have a strong presence across the country, including in the north and north-east and central provinces like Maidan  They are also closing  in the west, and the southern cities of Kandahar and Lashkar . US troops and their allies forced the Taliban from power in November 2001. The group had been Osama Bin Laden and other al-Qaeda figures linked to the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.
